Are BC Racing Coilovers Any Good?

Are BC Racing Coilovers Any Good?

Honestly, that’s a fair question. In the age of a new coilover company popping up every 28 hours, it’s easy to second-guess whether you should pull the trigger on Brand “A” vs. Brand “B.S.” As someone who’s been in the aftermarket part scene for the greater part of a decade, let me help answer the very simple question of “Will buying these coilovers hurt me or help me?”

What Are BC Racing Coilovers?

Welcome to MartiniWorks, where we offer the finest automotive parts and accessories for all your needs. In this article, we’ll be exploring BC Racing Coilovers, a suspension system that feels a little bit like Redbull marketing tactics. Littered on every cool motorsport everywhere, but still undecided on if it’s going to make you grow a third leg because it has weird ingredients. Weird analogy, but you get my meaning. BC Racing, established in the mid-2000s, is relatively young in the automotive industry. Regardless, they’ve quickly built a reputation for producing high-quality, performance-oriented coilovers. They cater to a wide range of vehicles (literally everything), from daily drivers to serious performance cars, emphasizing customization and driver preference.

And if this conversation is new to you and you’re just wondering what a coilover is, here you go:

Coilovers are a state-of-the-art suspension system that replaces your vehicle’s factory shocks and springs. These coilovers offer an adjustable ride height, damping force, and spring preload, allowing you to fine-tune your suspension setup to match your driving style and road conditions. Whether you’re a track enthusiast seeking precise handling or a daily driver looking for a comfortable yet sporty ride, BC Racing typically has an option for you.

What sets BC Racing Coilovers apart?

Pretty easy; they’re everywhere and they support everything. RTR Mustang’s in FormulaDrift all feature the iconic company. Chelsea Denofa, Chris Forsberg, James Deane, Adam LZ, Ryan Tuerck, Vaughn Gittin Jr., and more all run BC Racing coilovers. They focus on making you trust them through the motorsports that abuse their product. And rightfully so, because no matter if it’s a BR series, or one of their 5 other model lineups, the 1,100 suspension kits they offer can be used on any modified car.

From stock, installing BC Racing Coilovers will feel like you just lot loads of weight and the Rock theme is playing in the background. You’ll experience a significant improvement in your vehicle’s suspension system. You’ll get sharper steering response, increased traction, and a smoother ride overall. Whether you’re navigating through city streets or tearing up the track, BC Racing Coilovers will transform your driving experience like never before.

Benefits of BC Racing Coilovers

Easy. They’re affordable, accessible, and work damn well for most applications.

One of the standout features of BC Racing Coilovers is their customization options. These coilovers allow you to adjust the ride height and damping force, giving you the ability to fine-tune your vehicle’s handling and performance to suit your preferences. Not only that, but if you spend hours customizing your character in Skyrim, you’ll love the ability to customize your spring rate with BC Racing Coilovers through an optional Swift Springs upgrade as well.

The quality of the coilover is also pretty bang-on. You can expect hefty camber plates on applicable kits, a satisfying “click” when you adjust the compression/rebound, and a finish that is harder to chip than your Craftsman toolkit.

One of our favorite things about BC Racing is how they’re offering aligns with budget. For instance, the BR Series is by far one of the best bang-for-buck coilovers out there. It’s affordable, buildability, and still has all the features needed for a proper improvement to your car. They’re fully rebuildable, come with a warranty, and give you that height adjustment most people are looking to get, for less than $1,200.

Sure, it’s a lot of money and sure, it’s more expensive than MaxPeedingRods, or whatever, but these coils won’t snap in half when you look at them wrong.

Components of a BC Racing Coilover System

So you want to know what the “kit” comes with? Well, here you go..

1. Dampers:

At the heart of the BC Racing Coilover System are the high-quality dampers. These components play a crucial role in controlling your vehicle’s suspension movement, providing optimal traction and reducing body roll. With their adjustable settings, you can fine-tune the dampers to suit your driving style and road conditions, ultimately delivering a firmer or softer ride as desired.

2. Springs:

The springs used in the BC Racing Coilover System are carefully selected to ensure excellent performance and durability. These coil springs work in conjunction with the dampers to absorb the impact of road imperfections, keeping your vehicle planted and stable, even during aggressive maneuvers. With various spring rate options available, you can customize your ride’s height and stiffness to achieve the perfect balance between comfort and performance. Optional swift springs can get you further custom spring rates, but that requires working with us at MartiniWorks to finalize with you. 🙂

3. Shock Design

The shock design varies from a mono-tube shock design (BR Series) to a dual system with external reservoirs for quicker heat dissipation. However, 95% of you are going to buy the BR Series, so we’ll stick with that. You won’t get rebound damping on this series, but most advanced coilover customization won’t be needed for your street car. (Don’t overbuild your car, it’s a waste of money)

4. Camber Plates & Valving

With BC Racing Coilovers one of the best things is the fact that front camber plates come standard on applicable kits with rear camber plates being available should you want them. This gives you some more customization you’ll need if you’re going with aftermarket wheels and tires. Pair that with custom valving and you really are set for a fun Sunday drive.

5. Adjustability:

One of the most significant advantages of the BC Racing Coilover System is its extensive adjustability. These coilovers feature separate adjustments for ride height, compression, and rebound, allowing you to fine-tune the handling characteristics to suit your driving preferences and track requirements. Whether you prefer a softer, more comfortable ride for daily commuting or a firmer setup for spirited driving on the weekends, the BC Racing Coilover System has got you covered.

Types of BC Racing Coilovers

Still thinking you need a more expensive coilover for your track day? Well, don’t let us slow you down BUT it should be stated that as you go “up” the scale of BC Racing Coilovers and their series lineup, the  more you’ll need to know about compression damping, piston sizes, pillow-ball mounts, rebound adjustments, and more.

  1. BR Series: This series offers an affordable entry into coilover suspension without sacrificing performance, comfort, build quality, vehicle height, or handling. It’s a well-rounded choice for those looking to upgrade from stock suspension.
  2. RM Series: The RM Series uses a mono-tube inverted damper in both the front and rear for vehicles with McPherson style OEM strut suspension. This design is often preferred for performance-oriented setups.
  3. DS Series: Featuring BC Racing’s proprietary digressive piston design, the DS Series provides increased damping force at low piston velocities while maintaining a linear damper feel at higher velocities. This series is ideal for those seeking a balance between road and track performance.
  4. ER Series: The ER Series offers 30-clicks of independently adjustable compression and rebound, along with remote reservoirs to increase oil capacity and aid in faster heat dissipation. It’s designed for advanced drivers who require precise control over their suspension setup.
  5. HM Series: This series combines the best qualities of the RM and ER Series. It’s tailored for serious motorsport applications, providing advanced features for demanding driving conditions.
  6. ZR Series: The ZR Series is track-tested and developed specifically for racers who need more damping adjustability than what’s available in the ER or HR Series. It’s focused on providing maximum adjustability for professional racing scenarios.

Each series is designed to meet specific driving needs, from casual street driving to professional racing, ensuring that there’s a BC Racing Coilover option for nearly every type of driver and vehicle.

Things to Watch Out For With BC Racing Coilovers

We love BC’s, and even run them on our very own 2023 Nissan Z, but that doesn’t mean they’re perfect. While some occasionally report weird noises that come from their new kit, others will report that the spring pre load wasn’t setup correctly when they took the coilover out of the box. Here are some key things to keep in mind when you buy some coilovers from MartiniWorks (that’s us, buy them from us please and not some random company)

  1. Check that everything is tight – Loose noises typically come from the lower shock mount body not being threaded fully to the selected ride height. Other loosey goosey items include the spring tensioner being a little too loose. Typically these come pre-set but can sometimes come loose in shipping. Make sure they’re snug.
  2. Bottoming Out May Happen – Remember to give your car a shake down after install. Many times you’ll lower the car too much and either bottom out the car or hit bump stops in your new BC Racing coilovers. Spend time tuning your new adjustable coilovers vs. slamming it and “sending it.”
  3. Re-torque and check again – After a gas tank fill-up, retighten everything down. 9 times out of ten on your first coilover install you’re going to forget to tighten something down. Don’t be on a racetrack when that happens.

So Are BC Racing Coilovers Worth It?

As someone who’s ran their BR series and driven race cars with their top of the line ZR Series, I would say yes. From their customization offering to the swift spring upgrade, all of the right pieces are on this coilover system for the right price. I’d put their coilovers above Silver’s in daily drivability and competitive to Fortune Auto once you look at their RM and DS lineup. The camber adjustability is great, and the daily driving ride comfort makes these great for a car you modify and take to work. BC Racing has mastered the “motorsport coilover brand” at a “coilover for street use” price.
