Tein Suspension

Tein is headquartered in Yokohama, Japan. All of their coilovers, dampers, and springs are designed and manufactured in-house at their Japanese facility. They also run a North American branch (Tein USA) out of Downey, California, which handles distribution, warranty support, and their EDFC (Electronic Damping Force Controller) tuning services for the US market.

Tein covers a wide spread. The Flex Z is their entry-level coilover with 16-way damping adjustment. The Flex A adds hydraulic bump stops for a smoother daily. The Street Basis Z is a simplified, fixed-damping option for people who want a drop without fiddling with knobs. On the higher end, the Mono Sport and Mono Racing lines target track use with inverted monotube construction. They also sell lowering springs (S.Tech, H.Tech) and their EDFC system, which lets you adjust damping from inside the cabin.

EDFC stands for Electronic Damping Force Controller. It's a motorized system that mounts to compatible Tein coilovers and lets you adjust damping from a controller inside the car. No more crawling under the car with a flathead to click adjustments. The EDFC Active Pro version adds accelerometers and can auto-adjust damping based on driving conditions. It's a genuinely useful piece of tech if you switch between highway cruising and spirited driving regularly.

Tein sits in the mid-range bracket alongside brands like BC Racing and Fortune Auto 500. The Flex Z competes directly with the BC Racing BR series. Tein's edge is factory consistency and the EDFC upgrade path. BC gives you more aggressive spring rate options out of the box. Fortune Auto leans harder into damper quality at a slightly higher price. All three are solid for street and light track use.

Tein backs their products with a one-year limited warranty through Tein USA. It covers manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Normal wear items like dust boots and bump rubbers are excluded, and so is damage from accidents, misuse, or running without the supplied hardware. Keep your proof of purchase. Warranty claims go through Tein USA in Downey, CA, and turnaround is generally reasonable.

The Flex Z and Flex A are both designed with street use in mind. Spring rates are on the comfortable side compared to track-focused kits, and the 16-way damping adjustment gives you enough range to soften things up for daily commuting. The Flex A's hydraulic bump stops help absorb sharp impacts from potholes and speed bumps. If you want a drop without sacrificing ride quality, the Street Basis Z is even more comfort-oriented.

Tein offers a rebuild and re-valve service through Tein USA. You ship your dampers to their California facility, they inspect and rebuild them, and ship them back. This is a real advantage over budget coilovers that are essentially disposable once the valving wears out. Rebuild pricing varies by product line and what needs replacing. If you're running a set hard on track, plan on a service interval every 30,000 to 50,000 miles depending on how aggressive your driving is.

Tein's application list is massive. They cover most popular Japanese platforms (Civic, Integra, WRX/STI, Evo, 350Z/370Z, BRZ/86, Miata, S2000) plus a growing number of European and domestic applications. BMW 3 Series, Golf/GTI, Mustang, and Camaro all have Tein kits available. Coverage skews heavily toward Japanese cars because that's where the brand started, but they've expanded significantly over the past decade.
