The Z31 300ZX was Nissan's sharp left turn away from the lightweight Datsun Z formula. It landed in 1984 with a turbocharged VG30ET under the hood, digital gauges in the dash, and pop-up headlights that screamed mid-80s. The naturally aspirated VG30E made around 160 hp. The turbo car pushed closer to 200 hp.
The chassis rode on a strut front and semi-trailing arm rear suspension. From the factory, the Z31 was softer than the 240Z or 280Z it replaced. That makes it a solid candidate for coilover swaps and sway bar upgrades. The 4x114.3 bolt pattern (sometimes listed as 4x4.5) limits wheel selection compared to the 5-lug S13 or Z32, but companies like Enkei, Work, and Rays still make options that clear the struts and fenders.
The Z31 sits in an interesting spot right now. Prices are climbing, but they're still cheaper than clean Z32 Turbos or any flavor of S30. If you want a rear-wheel-drive Nissan with forced induction and 80s character, the Z31 is the one to grab before values catch up.
