The MK8 Volkswagen GTI is the 8th generation

The MK8 GTI runs a 5x112 bolt pattern with a 57.1mm hub bore. Those specs carry over from the MK7, so if you already have a set of wheels from that generation, the bolt pattern side of things is sorted. Most aftermarket wheels in 5x112 ship with a larger hub bore and include hubcentric rings to step down to 57.1mm. OEM wheel sizes are 17 or 18 inch depending on trim, with the Autobahn getting 18x7.5 from the factory.

The base MK8 GTI uses an open front diff. The Autobahn trim (and the 2025 refresh across all trims) gets VAQ, Volkswagen's electronically controlled limited-slip differential. VAQ makes a real difference on corner exit, especially in wet conditions. If you have a base model without it, brake-based torque vectoring is all you get. Some owners upgrade to aftermarket mechanical LSDs, but the swap is involved and changes the driving character significantly.

The EA888 Gen 4 (evo4) 2.0T. It makes 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque stock, paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG (DQ381). The Gen 4 moved to a different turbo housing and integrated exhaust manifold compared to the MK7's Gen 3. It responds well to a Stage 1 ECU tune, with most tuners reporting gains into the 300+ hp range on pump gas. The DQ381 DSG is stronger than the MK7's DQ250, which matters if you plan to push power.

MacPherson strut front, multi-link rear. Same basic layout as the MK7, riding on the MQB Evo platform. The Autobahn trim adds DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control), which gives you electronically adjustable dampers with comfort, normal, and sport modes. If your car has DCC and you install aftermarket coilovers, you lose that electronic adjustment. Some coilover manufacturers offer DCC-canceling modules, others require a simple plug. Non-DCC cars are more straightforward to work with for suspension swaps.

It is, but Volkswagen calls it MQB Evo. The wheelbase is nearly identical to the MK7 (103.6 inches). Structurally, the floor pan and subframe mounting points are similar enough that a lot of MK7 suspension hardware crosses over, though not all of it. The bigger changes are electrical. The MK8 moved to a new CAN-FD bus architecture and the ICAS infotainment system, which makes coding and diagnostics different from the MK7. OBDeleven and VCDS both support MK8, but module access and adaptation channels changed.

The infotainment system tops the list. Volkswagen replaced physical buttons and knobs with capacitive touch controls on the steering wheel and center console. Most owners find them frustrating, especially the climate slider. The head unit itself can be laggy on early production cars, though software updates have improved it. Beyond that, the rev-hang on manual transmission cars annoys enthusiasts, and some owners report the factory exhaust is quieter than the MK7's. Mechanically, the platform has been solid so far with no widespread reliability issues at this point.

The S and SE trims ship on 225/45R17 tires. The Autobahn comes on 225/40R18. A popular upgrade is going to a 235 or 245 section width on an 18x8 or 18x8.5 wheel. Wider rubber improves front-end grip noticeably on a front-wheel-drive car. If you track the car, a 245/40R18 on a square setup is a common starting point. Tire choice matters more than most people think on MQB cars because the front does all the work.

Same platform, different drivetrain and power. The Golf R gets the EA888 tuned to 315 hp, a Haldex-based AWD system, and a torque-vectoring rear diff. Suspension tuning is stiffer on the R, and it sits about 20mm lower than the GTI from the factory. The R is DSG-only in North America. If you want a manual and plan to mod anyway, the GTI with a tune closes the power gap quickly and costs less up front. The AWD tax on the R is real, both at purchase and in maintenance.
