The G87 BMW M2 is the 2nd generation

Factory bolt pattern is 5x112 with a 66.56mm hub bore. The stock staggered setup runs 19x9.5 front and 19x10 rear on the base car, wrapped in 275/35R19 and 285/35R19 tires. The Competition bumps to 20-inch wheels (20x9.5 front, 20x10 rear) with 275/30R20 and 285/30R20 rubber. Most aftermarket builds stick in the 19-20 inch range since the brake package fills anything smaller than 19 pretty tight.

Same CLAR architecture, same S58 twin-turbo inline-six, shorter wheelbase. The G87 rides on a 112.2-inch wheelbase versus 115.5 inches for the G80 M3. Suspension geometry is similar (double-joint spring strut front, five-link rear) but the M2 gets its own subframe tuning and spring/damper rates. Brakes are shared with the base M3/M4 setup. Think of it as the compact version of that platform, not a watered-down one.

The S58 3.0L twin-turbo straight-six puts out 453 hp and 406 lb-ft in the standard G87 M2. That's the same block and head architecture found in the G80 M3 and G82 M4, detuned slightly from their 473 hp base output. BMW kept the same bore spacing, forged crank, and closed-deck block. The engine responds well to a flash tune since the hardware is identical to the higher-output versions.

Adaptive M suspension (electronically controlled dampers) is standard. Front uses a double-joint spring strut layout, rear is a five-link design. Both axles get forged aluminum components to cut unsprung weight. The car ships with Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ damper modes. Factory ride height sits around 5.1 inches of ground clearance, give or take depending on tire size. The rear sway bar is beefy from the factory, which contributes to the car's willingness to rotate on turn-in.

ECU tune is the most popular starting point since the S58 hardware supports more output than BMW dials in from the factory. After that, a catback or midpipe swap opens up the exhaust note (the stock system is quiet for an M car). Lowering springs or coilovers to close the wheel gap come next for most owners. Intercooler upgrades are common on tuned cars because the stock unit heat-soaks during repeated pulls. Sticky tires on the factory wheels make a bigger handling difference than most bolt-on parts.
