The Mk8 Volkswagen Golf R is the 8th generation

5x112 bolt pattern with a 57.1mm hub bore. Factory lug bolts are ball-seat, 14x1.5 thread pitch. Most aftermarket wheels use conical-seat lugs, so double-check before you swap.

The Mk8 Golf R ships on 19x8 ET50 wheels wrapped in 235/35R19 tires. That's a pretty conservative width for the platform. A lot of owners step down to 18s for a better sidewall profile and cheaper tire replacements. 18x8.5 is a common aftermarket starting point.

VW gave the Mk8 R a torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system (R Performance Torque Vectoring) with two electronically controlled clutch packs on the rear axle. Each rear wheel gets independent torque distribution. In practice, it makes the car rotate mid-corner in a way no previous Golf R could. The front axle still uses an open diff with electronic braking intervention, which is the one weak spot if you're pushing hard on track.

The EA888 Gen 4 2.0T, rated at 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It's a revision of the same engine family from the Mk7 R, but with a larger turbo (IHI IS38-based), revised intake, and a particulate filter in the exhaust. The block itself is iron with an aluminum head. Responds well to a Stage 1 ECU tune, where most tuners see 370-380 hp on pump gas. The seven-speed DSG (DQ381) is the only transmission option in North America.

Stiffer springs, unique damper tuning, a larger rear anti-roll bar, and 15mm lower ride height compared to a base Golf. The Mk8 R also gets DCC (adaptive dampers) as standard in most markets, with comfort, sport, and race modes. The rear suspension is a four-link independent setup (same geometry as the GTI), but with beefier bushings and different spring rates. If you're planning coilovers, keep in mind the DCC wiring stays in place but the adaptive function won't work once you pull the factory struts.

ECU tune, intake, and a downpipe. That combination on the Mk8 R gets you into the 370-400 hp range depending on the tuner and fuel quality. After that, most owners look at wheels and tires (dropping to 18s with a wider tire), then suspension. An intercooler upgrade is worth doing early if you track the car or live somewhere hot, because the factory unit heat-soaks after a few hard pulls. Cosmetic stuff like mirror caps and lip kits is personal preference, but the Mk8's styling is polarizing enough that a lot of owners leave the body alone.
