An Honest Comparison | Apex Wheels VS-5 vs Apex Wheels VS-5RS

Compare the Apex Wheels VS-5 and Apex Wheels VS-5RS wheels side by side. Specs, fitment, real builds, and our take at MartiniWorks.

By alex martinez · Updated September 9, 2026

There's nothing more confusing than wheel names and one of the best examples of that are two identical wheels from the same company; Apex Wheels. The VS-5 and VS-5RS look identical, albeit one looks "thicker" and slightly less concave, but what're the actual differences? Why is one 60% cheaper and is it worth saving your dollars, or are you looking to get the best of the best?

This comparison answers exactly that. At MartiniWorks, we test, review, and push everything we sell to the absolute limit; which means we've seen when rotary forged wheels like the VS-5 win over forged counterparts. We've also seen forged variants get overstated and are never used for their intended purpose, like the VS-5RS. Let's jump in!

The Apex Wheels VS-5 is a spiritual, and arugably lesser wheel to the comparable Apex VS-5RS. On paper, it's heavier, it's more limited, and it's "only" flow formed vs. fully forged. So what's the pro? It's substantially more affordable. We've ran both the VS-5 and VS-5RS on our track cars and one thing hurts more than anything, and that's damaging them. In a world where functional abuse happens on race cars, often times going for a more affordable part that might be marginally less good than it's big bro

Pros
  • 60% cheaper than the VS-5RS counterpart.
  • Multi-stage liqui paint over a powder coated base
  • Side milled spokes for weight reduction
  • 1,600lb load rating (above minimum requirements)
  • Reinforced lip for increased strength.
  • 3 fixed molds
Cons
  • Due to manufacturing, the spokes are generally "larger" than its forged counterpart.
  • Less depth in spoke design (25mm deep vs. 41mm deep in some concavity profile comparisons)
  • No unpainted bead knurling

It's hard to argue that the Apex VS-5RS is one of the best looking and functionally impressive wheels within the market. It's exceptionally light (18.5lbs in 18x10) and manages a spoke thickness of 2.4mm without any loss to rigidity or strength. It's unpainted bead knurling allow for complete tire grip regardless of motorsport and its sprint spec variant is 32% stronger than the inner lip that's reinforced on the VS-5RS. And to tie it all together, it's one of the few wheels where testing has been done

Pros
  • Incredibly light in all fitment options (18.5LBS in 18x10)
  • Fantastic finishes
  • 10K Ton Forged 6061-T6 Engineering process
  • Vehicle-specific fitment that maximizes track width without excessing rubbing/cutting.
Cons
  • 40% more expensive than its flow-formed counterpart.
  • Stocking delays can cause large gaps in availability.

Expert Opinion

The Apex line of wheels focuses on delivering different solutions that are entirely based on one key thing; budget. Your budget will be the deciding factor between deciding that a fully forged VS-5RS has a bigger improvement over the flow formed VS-5 counterpart.

I could tell you different, but i'd be lying. The 2.8lbs of savings per corner from a 18x10 ET25 comparison between the two wheels is enough to make a difference on the track, but not off.

Our take? If pushing your budget here prevents you from buying properly good tires, get the VS-5's. If you can swallow the larger bill for the forged wheels and you have enough saved up to package them with good tires like Continental or Michelin's AND you plan to utilize your car as a driver's car, then the VS5-RS is for you.

For us, we recommend packaging tires with both options right here at MartiniWorks so you can save up to $300 in mounting, balance, and shipping fees. Plus, you can save up to $70 when you check out with Katapult. Is that a plug? Absolutely. Is it an honest savings? Also yes.
