The E46 BMW 325i might be one of the best all-around dailyable enthusiast cars BMW has ever built. You've got a naturally aspirated inline-six, rear-wheel drive, a manual transmission if you find the right one, and the kind of chassis balance that made BMW famous to begin with.
And no it’s not an M3. But that doesn’t mean you still can't have fun behind the wheel of a 325i. The cars themselves are relatively affordable, easy to work on, practical enough to daily drive, and are supported by one hell of an aftermarket community. But there is a slight problem. These cars are getting old.
That means building an E46 isn't just about throwing coilovers and wheels at it (unless you find a gem). A lot of the best modifications you can make are actually about getting the car to the car back to its former glory, and improving it along the way.
So how do you build an E46 325i the right way? Let's get into it.
When modifying an E46, it comes down to making sure the maintenance is done, and choosing the right parts instead of just a part.

If there is one thing you take away from this guide, let it be this. A neglected E46 is going to be a handful. A lot of the parts people call "mods" on these cars are really just things that should have been replaced 10 or 15 years ago.
And if you ask any long time E46 owner, the cooling system, suspension bushings, VANOS, DISA, CCV, and subframe are some of the biggest areas to address before spending money on performance parts.
The E46 cooling system is probably the most famous maintenance item on the entire car. The expansion tank, radiator, water pump, thermostat, and associated plastic components are all worth inspecting or replacing if their history is unknown. A lot of owners simply overhaul the entire cooling system rather than waiting for individual components to fail.
The M54's VANOS system is another area worth addressing. Worn VANOS seals can reduce low-end torque and throttle response without necessarily causing a dramatic failure. A properly rebuilt VANOS system can restore performance that the engine has gradually lost over the years.
The DISA valve is another common M54 weak point. The factory DISA uses a plastic flap and components that can wear or fail with age. A rebuild kit or upgraded DISA assembly can restore proper operation and eliminate a potential failure point.
The crankcase ventilation system is another area that deserves attention. Aging CCV components and vacuum leaks can cause rough running, oil consumption, and other drivability problems. If you're already pulling the intake apart, this is one of those things that's worth taking care of while you're in there.
Valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets are common maintenance items on the M54. They're not exciting. They're not performance mods. But fixing them will make your E46 smell less like burning oil and leave fewer BMW-shaped stains in your driveway.

This deserves its own section. The E46 chassis is known for cracking around the rear subframe mounting points. It's not necessarily a problem every car will experience, but it is serious enough that owners regularly recommend inspecting the area and reinforcing it as preventative maintenance.
For a street car, the important thing is inspecting the mounting points for cracks and addressing any problems before they get worse.
For cars that see aggressive driving, track use, or significant modifications, reinforcement becomes even more important.

The E46 has an excellent chassis from the factory, but most surviving examples have worn suspension components. Swapping out the suspension with some new coilovers or a fresh set of dampers really gives the overall feel a good refresh.

Once the suspension is healthy, sway bars can help fine-tune the chassis.

This is one of the best parts about modifying an E46. There are basically endless wheel options. The E46 uses a 5x120 bolt pattern, and the chassis looks good on everything from OEM BMW wheels to lightweight motorsport wheels.

The E46 looks good on almost everything, but there are a few styles that have become classics.
If you’re looking at OEM options:
This is where you should spend the money.
Good tires can make a bigger difference than almost any bolt-on horsepower modification.

The 325i already has capable brakes, but after two decades, there's a good chance yours aren't exactly operating at their best.
Start with:
For a street car, something like Hawk HPS or EBC Yellowstuff can provide a more aggressive pad setup without going completely track-focused.
For track use, dedicated track pads and high-temperature fluid become much more important.
Now we can finally talk about making the M54 a little louder and a little faster. Just keep your expectations realistic. The M54 is a naturally aspirated engine that's already reasonably well optimized from the factory. You're not going to bolt on an intake and suddenly have an M3.
Here are some of the most popular intake options for the E46
The biggest benefit of an intake on a 325i is usually the sound.
Headers are one of the more meaningful naturally aspirated engine modifications.
Headers can improve exhaust flow and give the M54 a much more aggressive sound.
A freer-flowing exhaust can give the 325i a deeper, more aggressive sound. But be careful, they can get REALLY raspy.
The goal should be making the car sound better. Not making your neighbors hate you. Even though they still probably will.
A naturally aspirated M54 isn't going to respond dramatically to a tune. A tune can help optimize an intake, headers, or other modifications, but don't expect huge horsepower numbers.
If someone promises 30 or 40 horsepower from a tune on a stock 325i, go somewhere else.

The E46 has aged incredibly well. That means the best exterior modifications tend to be OEM+ rather than completely reinventing the car.
One of the easiest ways to improve the appearance of a 325i is adding M-Tech styling.
These pieces give the car a more aggressive appearance while still looking like something BMW could have built from the factory.
Headlight lenses and lighting components are another area worth addressing. Fresh headlight lenses can make a huge difference on an E46. Clear side markers, updated interior LEDs, fresh tail lights, are relatively inexpensive ways to make an old E46 look significantly newer.
For a more aggressive build, CSL-style trunks and rear spoilers are extremely popular. Pair one with an M-Tech body kit and a good set of wheels and you've got a pretty serious-looking E46 without going completely overboard.

The E46 is fairly easy to modify. Meaning that it's also easy to spend way too much money on one.
This is the biggest mistake. Don't put $2,000 wheels on a car with a cracked subframe and a 20-year-old cooling system. Take care of the car first.
The E46 has a fantastic chassis. Don't ruin it with garbage suspension. A good spring and damper setup will almost always be better than a cheap coilover that's slammed to the floor.
The 325i is naturally aspirated. You're not going to turn it into an M3 with bolt-ons. Focus on making the chassis better.
Even if your car isn't currently cracked, inspect the mounting points. It's much easier to reinforce the chassis before there's a major problem.
